Facing the future World Series champion Braves on 7/11/21, Pablo became the only pitcher of the modern era to strike out the first nine batters of a game.
Capable performer in the field and at bat. Started to show his real worth in '47 despite injuries that year and the year before. Hit into upper bracket with a .296 for 126 games. Had best season with Detroit in '48. Led club in batting with .314 - and in clutch slugging with a .454.
Sam's 1950 batting average was only .251, but his base knocks included 23 home runs. Sam is one of the few players who never was in the minors. He came directly to the A's from college in 1938, and - with time out for Uncle Sam - has been with them ever since. His best season was 1941, when he hit .322 and drove in 106 runs. Sam got the All-America nod in football at U. of California.
