Dave is one of the few ballplayers who could have made the Majors as a pitcher or an outfielder! His Minor League record at both positions is outstanding. As a flychaser, he hit .393 in '48 at Grand Rapids and .308 at Dayton in '50. With Dallas in '52, he led the Texas League Pitchers, posting a 22-10 record and in his spare time hit .328 in 62 games, playing in the outfield.
J. Owen Wilson, outfielder of the St. Louis National League Club, was born at Austin, Texas, February 10, 1883, and started his professional career with Austin after graduating from the University of Texas. From Austin he drifted to Fort Worth and then to Des Moines. He was discovered by Fred Clarke entirely by accident in the spring of 1908, when Clarke was visiting his sick father in Kansas. He remained with Pittsburgh until the winter of 1913, when he was traded to St. Louis in that famous deal. He played great ball for St. Louis. He is a right-handed thrower and left-handed hitter.
This is Gus' first campaign with the Red Sox. Last season he was with the Pale Hose of Chicago. In 66 games, hitting .256. Had his best batting average in 1950 (divided between Yanks and White. Sox) when he hit .324 for 42 games. Began in baseball with Akron in 1941.
