It was the pitching of Tom Sunkel that enabled Atlanta to win the Southern Association pennant in 1938. Tom won 21 games while losing only 5 and topped the Association in strikeouts with 178 and led in the earned-run department with 2.33. It was on the strength of this stellar performance that the Cardinals brought Sunkel up to the major leagues in an effort to help them to bring back a renewal of the years when they were champions of the National League.
Platooned against southpaw pitching, Don mauled lefthanders in 1967 as he pounded them for 13 homers as he drove in 40 runs. Defensively, Don is practically flawless; has great range and possesses a strong, accurate throwing arm.
Hank started in baseball in 1941 as a pitcher but soon switched to outfielding. He's been a Yank since 1948 and in 1950 belted .320. In 1953, Hank posted a .304 mark and in the 1955 World Series hit .429.
