J. C. (Rube) Benton, pitcher of the Cin- cinnati National League team, was born in Clinton, N. C., June 27, 1890. Pitching for the Macon team in 1910, Benton proved the sensation of the season in the South Atlantic League. His work attracted the attention of the major league clubs, and Cincinnati purchased him for $7,500. The Reds tried him out in the fall of 1910, but sent him to Chattanooga in 1911. He was recalled by the Cincinnati team in 1912.
Roy is regarded the best catcher in the National League, and little doubt that he's the best in baseball. His value is attested to by the fact that he was named the National League's Most Valuable Player for 1953, the second time he has won the award. Behind the plate, he has a calming influence on pitchers. With bat in hand, however, he terrifies pitchers. His 41 homers, most ever hit by a catcher, 142 runs batted in, most in the league, and .312 average prove that.
