Never a great player, Bill McKechnie has proved himself an outstanding manager. He has managed three National League champions Pittsburgh in 1925, St. Louis in 1928, and last year, the Reds. In 1937, he was named the No. 1 major league manager by the Sport- ing News. McKechnie managed Pittsburgh from 1922 through 1926. He became a coach for the Cardinals in 1927 and was promoted to the managership in November of that year. In 1929, he managed the Rochester Red Wings but was transferred to the Cardinals in July. He managed the Boston Bees from 1930 through 1937, and was named manager of the Reds at the end of that season. As a player. McKechnie was an infielder, spending most of his major league time with Pittsburgh.
