Last season was Irv's rookie year in the American League. Batted .295 for 138 games. Had 160 hits, good for 249 bases. Hit 14 homers and drove in 98 runs. Entered organized baseball in 1946, hitting .363 for Santa Barbara. With Fort Worth in 1947 and 1948. With the Hollywood Stars in 1949, hitting .330. Never a great player, Bill McKechnie has proved himself an outstanding manager. He has managed three National League champions Pittsburgh in 1925, St. Louis in 1928, and last year, the Reds. In 1937, he was named the No. 1 major league manager by the Sport- ing News. McKechnie managed Pittsburgh from 1922 through 1926. He became a coach for the Cardinals in 1927 and was promoted to the managership in November of that year. In 1929, he managed the Rochester Red Wings but was transferred to the Cardinals in July. He managed the Boston Bees from 1930 through 1937, and was named manager of the Reds at the end of that season. As a player. McKechnie was an infielder, spending most of his major league time with Pittsburgh.
In 1951, Curt made his debut in pro ball with Denver of the Western League, and played with them right through '53 until he made the grade with the Pirates. He had his best Batting Mark in '53, hitting .281 and 280 in 1951-52. A top-notch fielder, Curt led the League's 2nd Basemen in '53 in Assists, was tied for 1st in Putouts and ranked 2nd in Fielding.
