Smoltz was 7 years old when he informed his mom he wanted to play baseball as a career. That was a good dream, she told him, but he needed a backup plan. So the native of car-crazed Michigan said he would be a filling station attendant. It never came to that, of course, as he wound up pumping gas over the plate instead of into cars.
Al was just 20 years old when he became the youngest man to win an American League batting championship in 1955. He has been an All-Star 13 times! A perennial Gold Glove winner!
