Bill comes to the Orioles in 1955 from the New York Yankees. With New York in 1954 he appeared in only 2 games, winning none and losing 1. He's been in organized ball since 1945, and he first came to the majors in 1952 with the Yankees. The Orioles are the 12th team Bill has been with in pro ball. With Syracuse in 1951 he had a 16-10 record and he led the International League in strikeouts with 131.
The Indians gave up long ball hitting Leon Wagner to acquire Russ in 1968. In 1953, Russ broke into pro ball with a bang. he slammed out 240 hits while compiling a fantastic .432 average!
Starred in Baseball, football and basketball at the University of Illinois and captained the championship ball nine in 1922. Was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals that year and sent to Houston in the Texas League two years later. Finished 7th among the leading batters of the Texas League with an average of .361 in 124 games, in 1925. Was bought by the Chicago White Sox. Spent three years in Chicago, one in Toledo and went to Phillies in 1930. Born in Stephens Point, Wisc. Sept. 15, 1900, 5 feet 11 inches tall, 187 pounds. Bats left, throws right handed. 1932 hit .235 in 62 games.
