Edwin Joost has been the property of the Cincinnati Reds for three years, but has been playing in the minor leagues for further seasoning. He was brought up this year from the Kansas City Club, where he played last year. He has been playing as a third baseman for the Reds, and is proving to be a steady fielder, improving all the time in both fielding and batting. Joost played most of his professional baseball in the Pacific Coast League, from where he was.acquired by the Cincinnati Reds in 1936.

Jimmy Lavender, pitcher of the Chicago National League Club, was born at Monte- zuma, Ga., on April 18, 1887. After gaining his first experience with Gordon Insti- tute, at Barnesville, Ga., Lavender had a professional trial with Augusta, of the South Atlantic League, in 1906. In 1907 he was with Danville, of Virginia League, and Philadelphia Americans purchased him, but sent him to Holyoke, of Connecticut League. In 1908 Boston Nationals drafted him, but turned him over to Providence, of International League. He re- mained with that club until the fall of 1911, when he was drafted by Chicago Nationals.

Fielding Tips - Hardest Play (1st b.). Most puzzling play for young first basemen comes on ground hits that are wide of the bag. He must instantly decide whether to try for the ball himself, or whether his second baseman is in position to make the stop. Bill Terry, manager and first baseman of the world's Champion New York Giants, follows the policy of trying for every ball that he can possibly reach, placing the burden of covering the base on such plays upon the pitcher, who should run over whenever there is the slightest doubt that his first baseman may not be able to get. back to the bag in time.
