A catcher during playing career, which went back to 1910. Billy's career as a manager goes back to 1926 with Louisville. He took over the controls of the Pirates in 1948. Won the manager of the year nod that season. Led the team, which had few stars, to a fourth-place finish.
Al has been used mostly as a relief hurler for the past several years. He got in 46 games with the Cards in 1952, won 12 and lost 5. He gave up 75 hits for 38 runs; struck out 55 and walked 42. Began career in 1936 with Little Rock. Joined Cardinals during 1943 sea- son and has been a steady winner for them each year. His record speaks for itself.
