"Hattie" was the top-fielding third sacker in the American League in '52. The Red Sox spotted him playing American Legion Ball and he signed his first pro contract in '42. After hitting .300 for Birmingham of the Southern Association in '50, "Hattie" was brought up to the AL. The Sox used him in a utility role in '51 and traded him to the Tigers early in '52. Fred was paratrooper during World War 1.
The cool, canny veteran has been pitching in pro ball since '35. He has worn a Major League uniform since '38, when he joined the Pirates. Nicknamed "Cannonball" when he first came up because of his booming fastball, Ken now relies more on control and "know-how". His best year was '49 when he won 17, lost 10, had a 3.02 Earned Run Average and was tied for the NL lead in Shutouts with 5. Ken was sold to the Phils in 1947.
