Though originally signed by the Twins, John was drafted by the Athletics in Dec. '63. A fine fielder, he led the shortstops in his league in fielding in '63 and in assists in 63 and '64.
The pitching sensation of the Texas League in 1938 was "Dizzy" Trout, who won 22 games for the Beaumont Club, losing only 6. He allowed only 180 hits in 233 innings of pitching, striking out 155 batters for an earned-run average of 2.16. For this record, one of the most impressive compiled by a minor leaguer, Dizzy was awarded the "most valuable player" award in the Texas League. He came up to the majors this year as a relief pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, along with his teammate and roommate, "Schoolboy" Rowe. Trout has been taking his regular turn at pitching for the Tigers and has won his share of the games.
As a boy, Cal used to dream of playing with the Dodgers. His dream came true in 1949, when they called him up from Mobile. A World War II Veteran, Cal broke into pro ball in 1942 and had a great minor league record with .327 at Olean (1942), 331 at Danville (1946), .345 and .337 at Mobile (1947-48), .336 at Ft. Worth (1949) and .333 at St. Paul (1950). Cal returned to the Dodgers in mid-season of 1950 and went to the Reds in June of the 1952 season.
