Virgil made a great comeback in 1953, winning 20 games for the first time in his major league career, and losing 10. His 2.93 earned run average was third best in the league. He struck out 149 men, second high in the league. Virg began the season with the St. Louis Browns, and after 16 games was sent to Chicago. Preceding season Virgil compiled one of the oddest records any pitcher ever amassed. Won 5 and lost 19. First and last of five wins were no-hitters.
"Goldie" was traded to the Browns by the White Sox during the winter. Although he was with the White Sox all of the 1950, season and at the beginning of the 1949 and 1951 seasons, he hasn't made the grade yet. The former U.C.L.A. student spent most of the '51 season with Seattle where he hit .240 and 12 homers in 108 games. He started in the minors in 1944 and came up to the majors after hitting .289 at Memphis in '48.
Pitching his way to 18 wins, the N. Y. Yankee southpaw curve baller was 4th in the AL with a 3.47 ERA last year.
