One of the immortals in big league baseball; for 17 years batted over .300 in the American League and in 1916 led the other batters with a mark of 386. One of the most graceful outfielders in the history of the game, also a fast base runner. With Boston Red Sox from 1908 through 1915. Spent 11 seasons with Cleveland, several years as manager, and a year each with Philadelphia and Washington. Became part owner of the Kansas City Club this year and also managed the team for a while. Born in Hubbard, Texas, in 1888.
Dick used his amazing speed mostly for pinch-running chores with the Cards last year. A $65,000 bonus player, he's one of the top speedsters in the National League. He signed with the Red Birds in 1953 when he graduated from High School, after receiving offers from fourteen Major League Teams. Dick received his early Baseball training from his dad.
Dusty is one of the all time great pinch hitters. Dependable Dusty pinch hit 55 times last year. In the '54 Series, his 2 homers helped sink the Indians 4 straight games.
