Roy is one of baseball's finest catchers. A hand injury which necessitated an operation hampered Roy greatly in 1954, so that his .207 batting average for 111 games is not a fair indication of his abilities with a bat. The preceding year saw him hit a fine .312, and lead the league in runs batted in with 142. He was named the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1953. He also received the award in 1951.
