Great things were predicted for Joe in 1950. But he suf- fered a bad shoulder injury early in the season. An operation kept him out of the lineup most of the year. He was in a total of 34 games and batted .318. Had 28 hits. Drove in 20 runs. Caught 81 games for the Cards in 1949. Began in organized ball with Springfield. Has also played for Columbus. Spent 3 seasons in the service.
1952 was the first season in the last four that Vic wasn't in the 20-game won circle. The three preceding seasons Vic won 21 games each. During two of those seasons he lost 10 games, the other he lost 8. His complete major league record reads 107 wins and 44 losses. Vic is one of the rare players who has compiled much better averages in the majors than in the minors.
Most 1909 T206 Set cards were distributed in packages of cigarettes but some were in packages of Polar Bear scrap tobacco (those often have tobacco stains and residue on them).
