No. 11, Going Back For A Fly Ball: Many outfielders find going back for a long fly ball the hardest problem in fielding their position. It means that while running backward at top speed it is necessary, part of the time, to take their eyes from the flight of the ball. This is particularly necessary if the ball is heeled toward the bleachers, fences or other obstructions. Lindstrom's method is to glance quickly at the ball race a little distance and glance around again, repeating the process as long as is necessary. In this way he can watch his approach to bleachers and judge the ball's flight at the same time.
"Jet-Propelled Sam" is considered the fastest man in the Big Leagues. In 1950, his rookie year in the majors, he led both leagues in stolen bases with 35 and repeated this performance in 1951. After batting .322 and 326 in 2 seasons with Monteal and stealing 89 bases in 1949, Sam got his chance with the Braves and made good. His first year up, he hit .273. He used to catch, but switched because it slowed him down.
Corey was one of the best hitters in MLB all year. He hit for average and power. Only injury kept him from posting a historic shortstop hitting season.
