The runner-up to John Montefusco for the N.L.'s Rookie of the Year award, Gary had a fine season in '75. He hit .270 with 20 doubles, 1 triple, 17 homers, and a club-leading 68 RBI in 144 contests split between behind the bat and in the outfield. The Expos signed him in 1972 and were impressed by his 23 homer, 83 RBI season for Memphis in '74, a year in which he also led I.L. catchers in fielding. He got a late season trial in '74, in which he hit .407, and now has 20 doubles, 2 triples, 18 homers, 74 RBI, and a .277 average in 153 big league games.
MY FAVORITE BASEBALL MEMORIES by Richie Ashburn. My greatest thrill was first walking in Connie Mack Stadium on opening day in 1948, my first year in the majors. The most exciting game I've been in was the last one in 1950. That was when Dick Sisler hit a three-run homer to beat the Dodgers and win a pennant for us. The greatest fielding play I've ever seen was Snider's catch of Jones' fly ball off the wall in Connie Mack Stadium, saving a game for Brooklyn. It was so good I still don't believe he caught it.
Ward Taylor Miller, outfielder of the St. Louis Federal League team, was born in Mt. Carroll, Ill., July 5, 1885. The next year he was at Madison, in the Wisconsin-Illinois League, and in 1908 he played with Wausau in the same league. Miller was then drafted by Cincinnati. After two seasons with Cincinnati he was released to Montreal in 1911. He went to Chicago from Montreal and played with the Cubs until 1914, when he signed with the Federals.
