In 1947 with Springfield played in 107 games, scored 94 runs and collected 138 hits for 232 bases. Slugging included 29 doubles, 7 triples and 17 homers and a .366 batting average. He began 1948 with Toledo of AA and had a .296 batting average when called up to parent Browns. In 69 games for Browns he had a .238 average.

Although Charlie could be No. 1 catcher on most any team in the majors, on the Yanks, he has Yogi Berra ahead of him. A fine receiver with a peppery style, he came up to the Yanks at the end of the 1948 season. In '48 at Portland, he hit .301 and led all Pacific Coast League Catchers in Fielding. Charlie was one of 2 Yanks to hit over .300 in '49, batting .315 in 58 games. In '50 he played in only 18 games. A War Veteran, he's been in pro ball since 1942.

Batting Tips - The Follow Through. Long distance hitters, like Al Simmons of the Chicago White Sox, get most of their power from a long follow through, allowing the bat to finish the full arc of its sweep. Time your swing to meet the ball in front of the body, where the sweep of the bat is at the point of greatest power and when the arms are fully extended. Never cramp the arms close to the body and always give the wrists loose, free play. After meeting the ball the bat will push it for a brief instant, thus adding distance and making clear the value of the long, free follow through.
