Ancestry German-Irish. Umpired in the Canadian-American League in 1942, moved to Eastern League three seasons before going to American Association 1945-1946. First year with the American League was 1947.
Bill never has played below Class Double-A ball in his 10 pro seasons. He won a 3rd trial with the Cards because of his fine play at Columbus in '53. In '50 at Columbus, he batted .280 and was chosen the League's All-Star Catcher. He had a .293 mark at Nashville in '45. Bill spent the '51 season with the Cardinals, playing in 36 games.
Elly reached base in each of his first three plate appearances in his MLB debut on 6/6/23, sandwiching a couple of walks around a scorching double that rocketed off his bat at 112 mph and took two hops before reaching the centerfield wall. He added his first career homer and triple the following day.
