Del is a good catcher. His fielding percentage in 1953 of .988 was only one point behind the average that led the league. He had 695 total chances and made only 8 errors. He had 22 doubles among his 99 hits, and his batting average was .236. In both 1949 and 1951 he tied for the most double plays by a catcher in the National League. He's been in baseball since 1941 and with the Cards since 1945.
"Granny" led the Phils in Doubles last year, placing 2nd in Team Homers, RBI's and Total Bases. His B.A. was the best of his Major League career. In '49 he led N.L. Shortstops in Assists and tied a record for playing 157 games in 1950. Collecting 6 hits, "Granny" boasted a .429 mark in the '50 World Series.
Babe entered pro ball in 1936 with the New York Giants after he graduated from Fordham University. He was traded to the Reds in June of 1947, and also played with the St. Louis Cardinals. This is his first American League experience. He was in the service from 1943-1945. Last season he hit .237 in 90 games.
