When Monte slid into third base during an exhibition game against the Cleveland Indians last spring and severely fractured his ankle, the Giants' pennant chances took a sharp dip. It was feared for a while that his career might be ended. He surprised everyone by getting back in action at the end of the season. In 1951 Monte batted .312 and led the National League in runs batted in with 121.
Max, 23, established himself in 2016 as a core player for the Twins. His first home run was a walk-off on June 12; his fourth and fifth produced a team rookie-record seven RBI on July 2; and his 12th through 14th all came in the same game on August 1.
Jim was with three teams in 1954, the Cubs, Des Moines and Beaumont. With the major league team he appeared in 18 games, all relief roles, and he had a 1-0 record. He was 0-1 with Des Moines. With Beaumont he went to the mound 13 times and had a 7-1 record, he pitched 68 innings and his earned run average was a fine 2.78.
