1950 was John's first complete season in the majors and he was chosen on the Rookie All-Star Team. A Fightin' Marine for 3 years, he got his first trial with the Reds in 1949 after hitting .282 at Jersey City, but was sent to Syracuse. In 1950, he hit .307 in 74 games. Traded to the Cubs after the '51 season, John had some great years in the minors, hitting .357 at Bristol in '43, .316 at Manchester, .339 at Jacksonville in 1947.
Van Lingle Mungo started his major-league career with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1931, after two years in the minor leagues with Fayetteville in 1929, Winston-Salem in 1930 and Hartford for part of 1931. In 1934 he led the National League pars for innnings pitched with 315 in 45 games. Two years later, in 1936, he was crowned the "strikeout king" of the National League, when he struck out 283 batters, equalling a league record on July 25th by fanning seven successive Cincinnati batters - a feat accomplished only three times before in 60 years of baseball. In 8 years of major-league baseball Mungo has pitched 1637 innings in 261 games, striking out 983 batters.
