The 1916 Sporting News M101-4 and M-101-5 sets were released only a few years after the famed tobacco card sets produced by the American Tobacco Company.
After five years in minors, Bob was drafted by Cubs for 1941 season. He spent two years with them and then entered service for 3 years. After his discharge he raised his batting average from its pre-war level, and finally hit his stride in 1948 when he caught 102 games for Cubs and hit .300. He had 18 doubles and 45 runs batted in.
Johnny was the sensation of the Dodgers' 1953 Spring Training Camp. He came very close to making the Dodgers in '52, but hurt his back after opening the season with Montreal. Johnny has only been playing professionally since '51. That year, after starting off with Newport News, he had a 21 and 3 record, 228 Strikeouts and a 1.67 ER.A. for Hazard of the Mountain States League.
