Rick Ferrell, the receiving end of the famous "Ferrell Battery," started with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1925. Farmed out to the minors for three years, he was declared a free agent by Commissioner Landis in 1929 and was signed by the St. Louis Browns. He was the ace receiver for the Browns for four and a half seasons and on May 11, 1933, was traded to the Boston Red Sox along with Lloyd Brown for Shea and cash. Rick was regular catcher for the Red Sox until the middle of the 1937 season, when he, his brother Wes, and Mel Almada. were traded to the Washington Senators, for Ben Chapman and Buck Newsom. A ten-year record shows 1116 hits in 1173 games, for an average of .291.
Sal is a mighty good catcher who, so far in his career, hasn't had a full opportunity to demonstrate his talents in the major leagues. A member of the New York Giants during his major league career, Sal was traded early, in 1953 to the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1952 a deal was arranged which would have sent him to the White Sox when it was discovered that waivers hadn't been asked, and the deal was cancelled.
