A product of the San Francisco farm system, Jim started his career in 1955 with a crash leading his league with a .363 mark. Capable at several positions, the infielder had his best season in the majors last year. Jim is a sharp fielding third baseman.
In '47, Vic went on a Home Run hitting spree, clouting 7 in 5 straight games, tying an American League Record. He spoiled Bob Lemon's bid for a no-hit game in '51, smacking a Homer in the 8th inning. One of the Tigers' top long-ball hitters, Vic ranked 3rd in RBI's and was tied for 4th in Homers in the League in '51. He had great years in '49 (hit .303, 20 Homers, 133 RBI's) and '50 (hit .308, 27 Homers, 123 RBI's). A World War II Veteran, Vic came up with the Tigers in 1947.
When Dodger veterans first saw "Duke" in spring training they said, "His bat will be his fortune." They weren't wrong for in his first 2 full seasons, 1949 and 1950, he hit .292 and 23 homers and .321 and 31 homers. A World War II veteran, "Duke" was brought up from St. Paul in midseason of '47 for a trial with the Dodgers. In 40 games he hit only .241 and was sent to Montreal. He came back in '48 and made the grade.
