Used as a utility outfielder and as part-time first-baseman, "Tommy" Henrich proved a useful member of the New York Yankees last year. The Ohio youth, who sold himself to the Yanks in 1936, batted a neat .307 in 90 games. and drove in 53 runs on 90 hits, including 10 home runs, 5 triples and 28 doubles. Henrich has a good throwing arm. His ability to shift from the outfield to first makes him doubly valuable to the Yanks.
"Puddin' Head" had the second best Fielding Average in the NL at 3rd Base in '52. He broke in with Terre Haute in '47 and was given trial with the Phils that same season. After hitting .275 for Toronto in '48, Wittle was brought up to the Phils to stay. He led NL 3rd sackers in both Putouts and Assists '49 and '50 and tied a Major League record by hitting 4 Doubles in 1 game in '49. Willie clouted 19 Homers in '49, 25 in '50 and 22 in '51.
The Pirates bought him from the Cleveland Indians after the end of the 1947 season. He was in 70 games for the Bucs last year, hitting .239. Broke into pro ball in 1939 and played with Bisbee, Joplin, Norfolk and Binghamton before joining the service. Took 1946 spring training with the Yanks and was sent to Kansas City for the season. Hit .303 that year.
