"Three times within the past two years he has come within an ace of pitching a no-hit game, allowing only one safe blow on each occasion. On August 5, 1932 there were two men out in the ninth inning when Sheriff Harris, Washington pinch hitter singled to spoil a perfect game for Bridges. Bill Brubaker, a graduate of the University of Southern California, became the property of the Pittsburgh Pirates, after making his professional start with the Beaumont Club in 1932. He was farmed out to the Toronto Club in 1933, recalled by the Pirates and again farmed out to the Albany Club in 1934 and again recalled by the Pirates. After playing first base and third base for the Kansas City Club, he was again recalled by the Pirates to take over the third-baseman job of Pie Traynor. Bill, has batted .289 for the Pirates in 1936, .254 in 1937 and .295 in 1938. His 7-year major-league record shows that Brubaker has taken part in 328 games, collecting 310 hits for a lifetime batting average of .276.
