Hit .317 in 83 games in 1950. Batted .260 in 125 games in 1949, and had a fielding percentage of .977 which was good enough to lead American League third basemen who were participants in more than 100 games. Entered organized ball in 1938. Stayed in minors several years. In St. Louis Browns' lineup briefly in 1943 and 1944. Then sold to Chicago. Became Sox regular, 1947.
"Dolly" Stark, who has been a National League umpire for the past 12 years, and who was voted the most popular umpire in the League a few years ago, took to umpiring quite accidentally. A friend, a former major-league star, needing an umpire badly for a college game, asked "Dolly" to officiate behind the plate and "Dolly" Stark has been umpiring ever since, having the reputation of being one of the best in the game today. Until a few years ago, "Dolly" Stark used to spend his off-seasons coaching the Dartmouth basketball team, and more recently was a radio commentator for a radio station.
