Coffee Talk Name that player!
Playing regularly at shortstop for the National League pennant-winning champions, the Cincinnati Reds, is young Edwin Joost. Joost, a brilliant fielder, is not a heavy hitter but he is making it hard for Billy Myers to regain his post by the way he has been handling the shortstop position. He has come through with some timely base hits too, strengthening his chances of holding the job. The Pacific Coast youth covers a lot of ground and with Lonnie Frey at second has helped tighten the Red in- field. Joost came to the Reds from the Coast League in 1936.
Buster, starting his 1st season as Red Sox coach, played for 6 Major League Teams. After a 1934 trial with the Cards, he made the way back to the Majors by hitting .331 at Rochester in '36, leading the League in RBI's with 134. Buster batted .295 for the Red Sox in '37, .285 for the Browns in '38 and .297 for the Yanks in '40. In '53 he coached the Redlegs.
George pitched much better than his record indicates, given one of the lowest run support averages in Baseball. He paints corners with 97 mph fastballs.
