The return of Whitey from Uncle Sam's service to the Yankee mound staff is looked upon by delight from everybody from the President down to the bat boy. He's a great young pitcher, and if he can pitch as well as he did before he left for his service hitch, he'll be a tremendous help to the Yanks in their quest for their fifth straight pennant. 1950 was the last year for Whitey.
One of the leading pitchers in the Buffalo Club of the International League is Horace (Hod) Lisenbee who is spending his second season with this club. Lisenbee went to the Buffalo team from the Boston Red Sox, last year, he pitched in 25 games for Buffalo winning 6 and losing 6. Lisenbee was born in Clarksville, Tenn., in 1903. Broke into the professional ranks in 1924 with Brookhaven in the Cotton State League. Sold to Washington in 1926, and 2 years later was traded to Boston. Is a right-hand pitcher, 5 ft. 11 in. tall, and weighs 170 lbs.
Cleveland Indians signed him hurriedly late in September 1920, to play shortstop after Ray Chapman had died after being hit by a pitched ball. Won the place right away and played in World Series that Fall. Remained with Cleveland until 1931 when he joined the Yankees. Now plays at third base. Starred in baseball at the University of Alabama before entering professional ball. Born in Titus, Alabama in 1898, 5 feet, 6 inches tall, weighs 155 lbs. Bats left handed, throws right. Last year hit .272 in 124 games.
