After batting better than .300 for three consecutive years, including .344 in 1960, Jose was brought up by the Athletics. Now with the Red Sox, Jose's 2-run pinch single with the bases loaded, brought defeat to his ex-mates in the 15th inning of a 1967 ballgame.
Fielding Tips - Shortstop's Throws. Most exacting position as far as throwing is concerned is shortstop, where a player must be able to throw at all speeds and from any angle. On plays from deep short the overhand throw is best, since it combines accuracy and speed. But on slow grounders or fast runners, the shortstop must throw underhand without wasting time to straighten up. Often, too, he must throw when off balance or between strides. Smart major league shortstops, like Dick Bartell of the New York Giants, study the foot speed of oppos- ing batters and play shallow or deep accordingly.
