A unique record belongs to Paul Derringer, one of the aces of the pennant-winning Cincinnati Reds. In 1931, when he came up to the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals, Derringer won 18 and lost 8 to lead the league. Last year, nine years later, he won 25 and dropped only 7, once more topping all in winning percentage. Derringer reached the peak of his career with his showing last year. The "Duke," as they call Paul, had an earned-run average of 2.93, third lowest in the league, and struck out 128, while allowing only 35 bases on balls. He lost a heartbreaker to the Yankees in the World Series and his performance was called one of the most courageous pitching exhibitions in a World Series.
Pitching Tips - Control. Most important item in a pitcher's kit is CONTROL. Blaeholder of the Browns says that even major league pitchers must practice constantly to keep good control. Many a pitcher who has a fine- fast ball, a good curve and a change of pace, fails to make the big league grade because he lacks pitching accuracy. Control is learned only by hard work and constant pitching to "spots." Practice by throwing, easily, at your catcher's knee, at his belt buckle, or at his mitt. Remember! When in doubt about a batter's weakness, pitch low and inside.
Sal's line drive which Hank Bauer caught for the last out came close to salvaging the '51 World Series for the Giants. He's wholly a Giant farm system product winning his first contract at a Polo Grounds' tryout. He was converted to a catcher by Carl Hubbell and batted .318 for Manchester in '46, his 1st year of pro ball. Sal has had trials with the Giants in '47, '48, '49 and '50 and finally stuck with them in '51.
