The rookie righthander was a pleasant surprise for the A's in 1965. Signed to a Kansas City contract in 1964, Jim didn't pitch in a pro ballgame until last season. His debut was delayed because of an operation for the removal of buckshot in his leg. Quickly rounding into shape, the 18 year old became a big favorite of the fans in Kansas City. Jim was a star athlete in his North Carolina high school, winning letters in baseball, football and track.
"Stubby" was always tough on the Yankees, so they got him from the Browns in 1951 and used him in relief. A graduate of Western Michigan College, he started in the minors in 1941 and after winning 26 while losing 15 in 2 years, the Tigers brought him up. "Stubby" pitched for the Tigers through 1949 and went to the Browns on waivers in 1950. His best Big League record was 11-5 in 1947. During the winter he works for a paint manufacturing company.
A top outfielder in the major leagues, he is also a potent man with a bat. He played 112 games his rookie year and batted .276. He ran that average up in four years to .318 and then entered the armed services. From the war he returned to lead the National League in runs batted in. Four times an All-Star. Twice in World's Series. Last season he batted .321 and batted in 90 runs.
