"Rip" began his professional baseball career with the Dallas Club in 1928. He entered the majors in 1984 with the Chicago White Sox with which team he is now playing.

At the end of the 1950 season he came to the majors with the Cubs, and has been with them ever since. In 1952 he made a few appearances in the outfield, the only time he has played anywhere but at third base.
