The year 1940 was a big year for Frank Hayes. The finely-built catcher of the Philadelphia Athletics, besides being one of the busiest backstops in the league, hit .308 for the season, marking the first time in his career that he had topped the .300 mark. Hayes was a valuable man on the A's roster, bringing in 70 runs on 143 hits, which included 16 home runs. He represented the A's in the All-Star game against the National League.
