Shortstops with strong throwing arms, as with Bill Urbanski of the Braves, have a great advantage over weak-armed players in that position. A shortstop with a quick, powerful throw, can play deeper in his position and thus have time to cover more ground and to stop ground hits that would pass a man who is forced to play shallow for the sake of the shorter throw to first base. Study the batters. Even weak throwers can play deeper and take more throwing time on slow footed hitters than is the case with faster men.

He had trials with the Indians and Pirates after leading the Ohio State, Michigan State and Eastern Leagues in batting with .398, .394 and .344. From '47 through '51, he had Batting Marks of .278, .285, .282, .285 and .266 and HR totals of 14, 17, 23, 24 and 22 during those years. Wally batted in 104 Runs for the Pirates in 1950 and led NL outfielders in '50 with a .991 Fielding Mark.
