THE GREATEST FIELDING PLAY I'VE SEEN: Larry Doby, of the Indians, made the greatest catch I've ever seen. The game had reached the 7th inning, and we were behind by two runs, but were threatening with two men on base and one out. Tom Umphlett sent a drive to deep left center. Doby was running at top speed directly towards the wire fence. As he reached the fence, he leaped, still at top speed, caught the ball as he landed on the fence, mostly on the home run side. After the catch, he lay balanced on top of the fence, rolled over, fell to the ground in fair territory.
Dave made his entrance into Major League ball felt by the two top A.L. teams last year. He tamed the tough Indians 4 times and chopped down the pennant-winning Yankees twice, without a defeat. Son of George Sisler, Hall of Fame First Baseman, Dave graduated Princeton University before starting his baseball career. During '56 he started 14 games, among which were a two and a four hitter.
Considered by most as game's best 3rd baseman. Has been a hot corner star since debut in majors just four seasons ago. Strong defense man and led Tigers in batting with a .320 in 47. Injured in '48, so only played 92 games. Hit .304 and fielded .969. Chosen for All-Stars three times.
