After hitting .353 in 64 games for Denver in 1961, Dick was brought up for keeps by Detroit. In 1966, the hard-hitting Tiger led all A.L. shortstops with 23 home runs. Dick hit a home run in the 1968 World Series vs. Cards.



Upon his graduation from DuPont Manual HS (Louisville, KY), Reese didn't seem destined for the bigs. He played just five games as a senior, after all, so he found work splicing cables for a phone company. Climbing up and down the poles helped him bulk up, and he muscled his way into the Brooklyn lineup by 1940.
