Most grid critics agree that the "Flying Dutchman" is the greatest long passer in football history. Won NFL passing title in 1950 and 1952 and placed 2nd in 1951 and 1953. All-America quarterback at University of Oregon before joining Rams in 1949. Norm's wife, Gloria, was his biology teacher at Oregon. They have three young daughters.
Caught 42 passes in 1950, gaining 592 yards (average gain 14.1). Scored 4 TD's passing, 3 TD's running. Set a record for high school backs in scoring in 1942 with 236 points. Entered West Point in 1943. Unanimous All-American choice 3 years in a row. Athlete of the Year in 1946. Made 20 TD's in 1 season (1944). Averaged 11.51 yards per carry in 1945. Served in Army 3 years.
Chosen All-Pacific Coast Conference quarterback three years running...considered by many as the greatest high school player in Southern California history..all around back, but particularly adept at heaving long passes...completed 6 at 60 yards or over... Was first Negro to be signed by NFL...has served in the Los Angeles police department specializing in juvenile work... married and the father of a 5-year-old son.
