Hawks Card of the Day

Dikembe Mutombo
Height? Hunger? No, the quality that makes Dikembe one of the NBA's greatest shot-blockers, the five-time NBA leader says, is patience. "Patience comes from studying the tapes and knowing the opponent," he says. Mutombo has been patient enough to rise to seventh on the all-time list of swats (passing Robert Parish last season) - but first in blocks per game (3.57).

Name that player!

As his nickname, "The Human Highlight Film," indicates, Atlanta forward Dominique Wilkins is one of the NBA's greatest showmen. The winner of the 1985 NBA Slam-Dunk Championship when he beat Michael Jordan with back-to-back perfect dunks, Wilkins made history when he triumphed again in 1990, joining Jordan as the only two-time winners. Wilkins nearly claimed a third title, but in what was perhaps the most exciting dunk contest ever, he narrowly fell to Michael Jordan in the finals of the 1988 event.

Was drafted by Atlanta on the first round in 1985, Fifth pick overall... Member of Gold Medal-winning U.S. 1984 Olympic team.

The Hawks' star is regarded as the most proficient of all big men in every phase of the game. A tremendous team player, Bob can hit from the outside with a jump shot, drive for the basket with authority, set up his teammates with split second passes and clamp down on defense. With Bob setting the pace, St. Louis won its fifth straight Western Division championship last season. In seven years in the NBA, he has never fallen below a 20-point scoring average for any season. Here he's shown going up for a shot after evading Paul Arizin of the Warriors.
