Name that player!

Another local boy who made good. Ted pitched amateur ball in Detroit in 1941 and soon attracted attention of Tiger scouts, who signed him and sent him to Beaumont. He was optioned to Winston-Salem and won 13 games in 1942 before entering service. Known as "strikeout king" in service where he won 12 and lost 1. In 1947 with Buffalo he won 11 and lost 7, striking out 138 men in 150 innings. With Tigers last season his record was 6-2.

When Jobe is staring down the batter, he's running through a mental Rolodex of options with which to fell his foe. The trusty four-seam heater is always a good choice for the righty, as are his cutter and changeup. If he wants to shatter hitters' hopes with a breaking pitch instead, his sharp slider/curve hybrid is in the cards.

A consensus top-30 prospect entering 2024, Colt made the Opening Day roster at 22 and served as Detroit's regular second baseman. He was the AL Rookie of the Month in July, hitting .322 with a 1.048 OPS.

Back to the Front! Tigers card back du jour...

Bill Freehan
After becoming one of six American League players to reach the .300 circle in '64, Bill tailed off last season. The big backstop was second in fielding in the A. L. in 1964 with a .993 average, just one point behind the all-time Tiger record. Bill's big thrill? Socking two home runs in a game vs. the Twins.
