Mariners Card of the Day

Ken Griffey, Jr.
The son of major league veteran Ken Griffey, who is still active with the Reds, Ken, Jr. is a rising star on the Seattle horizon, possibly the finest young talent the Mariners have ever produced. He will probably begin the '89 campaign at Triple-A Calgary since his projected half-season at Double-A Vermont in 1988 was cut short by a back injury. M's drafted him No. 1 in June '87, out of Cincinnati's famed Moeller HS, and 17-year-old Ken broke in with .320 and 14 HR at Bellingham that season.

Name that player!

It had been a long time since baseball had seen a player of Griffey's magnitude. Combining the daring defensive exploits of Willie Mays, one of the sweetest left-handed strokes of all time and an infectious smile, the Hall of Famer took the league by storm to become one of its most popular players during the 1990s.

Jorge clobbered six home runs that traveled at least 415 feet in 2024, including a pair on back-to-back days against the White Sox in July. On September 24, he went 4-for-4 with a blast against Houston.

Mitch ripped a double into the corner in left field in his first game with the Mariners on 3/28/24. It was a preview of what was to come from the veteran, who blasted his maiden HR with the Club on 4/17.

Julio Rodriguez
Julio rose to number two on the midseason prospect list released in 2021 by MLB Pipeline. After crushing Single-A Everett, Julio was promoted to Double-A. In his first 19 games at Arkansas, he slashed .319/.420/.536 with four roundtrippers. He also walked nearly as many times (10) as he struck out (16). He's a key building block for the Mariners.
