If his hitting picks up, smooth-fielding Monty is bound to stick in the majors this year. He spent 1951 shuttling between Pittsburgh and Indianapolis, where he hit .255 in 37 games. A veteran of 3 years in the Service, Monty first came up to the Pirates in 1948 after hitting .272 at Ft. Worth. He was sent down to New Orleans and brought back again in '49, when he hit .216 in 107 games. In '50 Monty hit .281 at Indianapolis.
He is already being called another "Babe Ruth." His amazing clouting drove out 51 home runs last year, to tie Johnny Mize. In 1946, he also led the National League in home runs. Second player since 1900 to do this as a rookie. He joined the Pirates in 1943 but, due to Uncle Sam's prior claim on his time, it was not until 1946 that he appeared in a game for the Pirates.
With the crack of the bat, Dick is moving to scoop up the ball and convert a hit into an out. For the second straight year he was among the leaders in Total Chances, Putouts and Assists for shortstops. A great all-around, natural athlete, Dick went to Duke University where he starred in basketball, and was All American for scoring over 23 points a game. He signed a bonus contract in 1952.
