Pirates Card of the Day

Willie Stargell
The hard-hitting outfielder was one of the main reasons for Pittsburgh's '65 pennant bid. His powerful bat poled more home runs and drove in more runs than any other Pirate player.

Name that player!

Bob first attracted attention while playing American Legion ball, and also while playing at West Lafayette High School. Earned ten letters in baseball, football and basketball at high school and was picked as all state halfback in football. In a 7 inning Legion game Bob struck out 20 batters. 1950 was his first experience in organized ball. He began with Waco of the Big State League, then was promoted to Indianapolis. In final Waco appearance he pitched a no-hitter.

Grandal was the starting catcher in four of Skenes' first five starts in 2024, so he got the best view of anyone of the Pirates phenom. The right-hander did not disappoint, averaging 100.1 mph on his fastball in his May 11 debut. Yasmani backed that performance with a three-run homer in a 10-9 win, then caught six no-hit innings from Paul six days later.

Al was the big stopper for the Pirates last year leading the club in E.R.A. The thin righty's excellent control makes him a top relief man.
