"Arky" Vaughan
One of the leading shortstops in the National League, "Arky" Vaughan has never hit less than .300 in a Pittsburgh uniform. He has been with the Pirates since 1932 and shows a lifetime batting mark of .329. "Arky", nicknamed so because of his Arkansas background, was a protege of Honus Wagner, and has proved more than just an able pupil. Last year, he batted .306, driving in 62 runs in 152 games. He is co-holder of the National League record for leading the league in bases on balls the most consecutive seasons - three, and he has been chosen four times for the All-Star team, averaging .308. He was the league batting champion with .385 in 1935.

When the Giants' Sal Maglie was only 4 outs away from tying the record for consecutive shutout innings last season, up came Gus Rell and slammed out a home run. Gus began 1950 with Indianapolis. Had compiled an amazing.400 in 38 games when the call to the majors sounded. Gus hit. .282 in 111 games for the Pirates. He had 22 doubles, 11 triples and 8 home runs. Drove across 53 markers.



Powering the Pittsburgh Pirates to a third place finish in the National League last year, were teammates Donn Clendenon and Willie Stargell. Willie, a lefthanded batter hit .272 for the season. The most important number in his season's statistics was 107: his RBI total. The hard-hitting outfielder was the team's leader with 27 home runs. A big left-handed batter, Willie began in pro ball in 1959. The Pirates' first sacker, Donn Clendenon had his peak year in the majors in 1965 when he hit a solid .301. Big Donn joined Pittsburgh in 1961 after compiling some sizzling minor league records. With Savannah in the Sally League in 1960, he was the homer king with 30 circuit clouts while compiling a .335 batting average. In 105 ballgames in the Pioneer League, Donn rocked the apple for a .356 clip.



One of NL's top sluggers, Willie led Bucs in Homers & RBI's last season. Tied major league record, 8-1-70 with 5 Extra Base Hits in one game. Ranks 3rd on all-time Pirate Homer list.

Walker Cooper
Joined Pirates as free agent just before spring training. It is his fifth National League club. Has hit 154 major league homers in career that began with Cardinals in 1940. Best year was 1947 when he hit 35 homers and drove in 122 runs on average of .305. Hit three homers and drove in 10 runs in single game in 1949.
