Bernie Friberg
A valuable player to have on a ball club. Has played every infield position and in outfield in the big league. Four times batted better than .300. Hails from Swampscott, Mass., and first attracted attention as ball player at Lynn English High School. Grabbed by Chicago Cubs in 1919. Sent to Kansas City in 1921, recalled and has been big leaguer ever since. Went to Phillies in 1925. Bought by Red Sox last Winter. Last year batted .240 in 61 games. Is a right hander, five feet, 11 inches tall and weighs 175 pounds. Born in 1899.

Chalked up a record of 18 and 11 for the Sox in 1951. Had an earned-run average of 3.26. Got into a total of 36 games. Pitched 221 innings. Walks exactly matched strikeouts (77). Mel's big year was 1949 when he had 25 wins against 7 losses. Led league in complete games (27).



Discharged last May after 2 years in the Army, Karl spent the '53 season learning Major League Baseball with the Red Sox. Before entering Service, he showed great promise in the Minors. With Birmingham in '50, Karl hit .321, with 23 Homers, 14 Triples, 29 Doubles and 100 RBI's. He was batting .320 in 63 games at Louisville in '51 when called into the Army.



He earned his 1st major league Win: 4-26-80.
