Twins Card of the Day

Tony Oliva
The parameters of the strike zone were merely a suggestion to Oliva, who was happy to flick his bat at anything and everything within reach. That approach would have led to soaring whiff totals for many, but not the Minnesota mainstay. Instead, he swung his way to a trio of league batting titles and retired with a lifetime average of .304.

Name that player!

In 1966 Joe will face the challenge of breaking into the power-packed Minnesota line-up. Though used sparingly in 1965, the young man impressed Mgr. Mele and his teammates with his hustling brand of play. Joe began as an outfielder but The Twins' Instructional School taught him how to play the hot-corner.

As noted on his 2006 Topps Allen & Ginter card, Joe Nathan was acquired by the Twins via a trade with the Giants on November 14, 2003. The Pine Bush, New York resident has amassed a win-loss record of 32-16, gathered 88 saves, and posted an overall ERA of 3.44.

Sam has managed the Minnesota Twins since 1961. He slowly and patiently molded a winning team. The likeable leader was finally rewarded when his club captured the 1965 American League Pennant. A fine ballplayer in his own right, Sam was equally adept in the outfield and at first base. Sam left his mark in the majors. In 1947, he was the American League's "Rookie of the Year." In 1951, he led the circuit in doubles, and in 1951 and 1953, Sam was the top outfielder in the league defensively. Sam also tied two major league records in one inning by belting a triple and a home run. That prodigious feat enabled him to equal the record for most long hits and runs batted in for an inning. Sam accomplished this in the fourth inning of a game on June 10, 1952.
