Phillies Card of the Day

Power Plus: Wes Covington, Johnny Callison
Philadelphia is most fortunate to have this pair of slugging lefthanded batters. Johnny Callison has been the most productive lefthand batter on the Phillies club for the past three years. He has clouted 81 home runs and drove in an average of 88 runs during that span. Johnny has established himself as one of the top sluggers in the loop. He was obtained from the Chicago White Sox in 1959. Wes Covington was formerly a member of the 1957 and 1958 pennant winning Milwaukee Braves. The veteran performer has been a clutch ballplayer for the Philadelphia Phillies for the past three seasons. Wes is a power hitter with fine batting average. He led the Sally League in hitting in 1955. His .330 average for Milwaukee was a prominent factor for the club's first place finish in 1958. Wes is rarin' to go in 1966.

Name that player!

Came within one putout of pitching a no-hitter against the Cardinals in 1950. Had to be satisfied with a 1-hitter. Had a 9-11 record in 32 games. Best year - in either majors or minors - was 1949. Russ won 17 games and lost 8 for a percentage of .680. His 3.08 earned run average was lowest in League for a right handed pitcher. Came to majors with Cubs, end of 1946. First with Phils, 1949.

Mac reached the big leagues in 1972 without ever starting a game in the minors. A relief specialist, he gained valuable experience in a pressure spot last August 1st in 15th inning of game vs. Mets. With the score tied, runners on 1st & 2nd and one out, Mac entered the game. He proceeded to fan Willie Mays and Dave Schneck to end the inning, then was lifted for a pinch-hitter.

Johan already had secured his third consecutive 30-steal season on the farms when the Phillies summoned him to bolster their outfield in 2023. He debuted by swiping a bag in the opener of a doubleheader on July 15, then racked up three hits and two RBI in the nightcap. Over his first 20 games, Rojas went 17-for-53 (321) with nine RBI and five thefts.

Ray Culp
Ray was selected 1963 Rookie Pitcher of the Year. The young righthander was the lone rookie on the National League All-Star squad in 1963. Hampered by a sore arm last year, Ray still posted a respectable record.
