Gary broke into pro ball in 1956 at Holdrege and led his circuit with 142 strikeouts in 128 innings. His biggest thrill of 1968 was socking a grand-slammer vs. the N.Y. Yanks.
Went to the White Sox from the Senators during the 1950 season. Eddie's fielding mark of .990 was just a point from the top AL percentage. He batted .295. Drove in 86 runs. Had 15 doubles and 21 homers. Took part in one triple play. Came to majors with Cleveland toward end of 1942 campaign. Spent next 3 seasons in the service. Farmed to Baltimore on return. Traded to Washington for 1949.
Following a sub-par 2003 campaign, Freddy came up with a slider returned to his winning ways and trimmed 0.70 off his ERA last season. "I love that pitch," says the burly veteran, who has become expert at changing speeds with it and locating it. Garcia already had two fastballs, a change-up and a big curveball.
