Sid was a bright spot in a rather bad Boston season. In the field he made only one error in the outer garden for a fielding percentage of .996, leading National League outfielders. He handled 273 total chances. He was in the Giants' organization, and was one of the most popular players on the Polo Grounds' team for a number of seasons when he was traded to Boston in December 1949.
Chipper set a curious major league record in 1998: most home runs versus one type of pitcher to start a season. His first 24 roundtrippers, it seems, came against righthanders, breaking the old mark of 19 by J. T. Snow in 1997. Jones, who also owns the third-highest total (18 vs. RHPs in '97), finished with two vs. lefties.
Del marked in 1950 his first full season on the roster of a major league club. The powerful young backstopper (now with the armed forces) gave evidence of becoming one of the top catchers of the NL. He appeared in 79 games. Drove in 37 runs on a total of 56 hits. The Braves brought Del up to the majors in mid-season, 1949. He had started the campaign with Evansville, Three-I league.
