In the tough jump from amateur to Big League, newcomer Geoffrion has given a spectacular account of himself. Playing his 3rd season in pro hockey with the Montreal club, his jet-propelled shots earned him the nickname of of "Boom Boom", Stood 6th in last season's NHL scoring with 54 points.
Rarely is a defenseman picked as rookie of the year in NHL. In fact, until Kent Douglas was chosen in 1962-63, it hadn't been done. Then Jacques repeated on behalf of Canadiens. Tall and graceful, Jacques has the good moves and cool playmaking ability.
Mario experienced both highs and lows during the 1989-90 season. His biggest high came in the NHL All-Star Game in Pittsburgh when he scored four goals and won the game's MVP award for a record third time. His low point came in the second half of the season when a herniated disk sidelined him for 21 games and interrupted his 46-game point scoring streak. But he still finished the season with 123 points. Mario, Rookie of the Year in 1984-85, has recorded at least 100 points in each of his six NHL seasons. He won the Art Ross Trophy as the league's leading scorer for the second straight season in 1988-89 and won the Hart Trophy as the league's MVP in 1987-88.
